La BORDEAUXTHÈQUE

Saint-Estèphe

The Saint-Estèphe appellation includes 5 Classified Growths, no First Growth, but 2 Second Growths, 1 Third Growth, 1 Fourth Growth and 1 Fifth Growth. It also includes many Crus Bourgeois for a total number of 53 producers. The appellation is the northernmost of the Medoc and is located 60 km north of Bordeaux. It covers 1 250 hectares mostly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) but also Merlot (40%) and some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The terroir is composed of sand and gravel on a clay substrate. The mounds and hillocks are well drained so soils are rather dry. As it is located near the Gironde estuary, the area is protected from excessive temperatures.

Saint-Estèphe wines are tannic, powerful and full bodied with a strong aromatic personality and an extraordinary ability for aging.
